Course Offered: Spring 2017
The course introduces the students to the study of folklore with specific reference to the folk tales of the Middle East. While the bulk of the folk tales examined will consist of those collected during the course of the 20th century, the course will also present these tales in a diachronic light with reference to the sacred texts of each community and comparable myths, legends, tales, and fables from the ancient world.
The folklore examined include creation myths, beast fables, proverbs, ghost stories, fairy tales, and Middle Eastern reflexes of such well known tales as the Faust legend, Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty.
This course also satisfies the SAS Core Curriculum Goals "Philosophical and Theoretical Issues" (AHo) and "Arts and Literatures" (AHp).
